With Thanksgiving and Christmas fast approaching it means a lot of gatherings and a lot of people visiting each other. I know I for one can get overwhelmed and stressed out when hosting a holiday at my home with everything that needs to be done to accommodate everyone. There are always so many things to do and a lot of meals to make. I find myself not able to actually enjoy the time with my family. I always seem to be running around getting last minute things together and making sure everything is perfect before everyone arrives.
Here are some tips to help take the stress out of hosting Holidays so that everyone can enjoy the time they have with one another and no one has to be stressed out or overwhelmed.
Divide and Conquer: Make a list of everyone coming and see who is willing to help out with what. You can create a to do list and divide things up between everyone willing to help to take some of the load off of yourself.
Digital Invites: Create a Facebook event or even a mass email or some other form of communication so that everyone can talk about the plans and details. It will help to make sure that everyone knows what is going on and can keep in touch on any changes that may happen.
Create a list: Make a list of what everyone can bring to help with food. You can have people pick a dish from a list or mark down what they intend to bring to help cut down on the food you will have to make yourself. If everyone brings at least one thing it will save you time and money and loads of stress! This would also be great information to put out to everyone so that you can all coordinate and know who is bringing what. It may help to make a list of categories and have people mark their name down under the category that they will bring from and what they will be bringing. Some main categories would be main dish, sides, drinks, desserts, and serve ware.
Easy Clean Up: Try to use disposable items when it comes to either cooking or serving the food when possible to help cut down on clean up after everyone leaves. No one likes to have to plan and host a gathering and then spend tons of time cleaning up after everyone is gone. It will help save some time so that you can relax once everyone has gone home.
Gift Exchange: For a Christmas gathering if you like to exchange gifts, try out a secret Santa exchange to cut down on having to buy the perfect gift for everyone. Not only will it save you time but it will save you money as well as the stress of hunting down the right gift for every person. You can have everyone create a wish list, decide on a spending limit, and have everyone draw names.
I think the biggest tip to taking the stress out of hosting a holiday get together is to not worry about the small stuff. Try to remember what the holidays are about and what truly matters. People will remember the precious moments and time spent with family more than how many side dishes or decorations you had.
