As a mom of three I know how hard it can be trying to keep things organized. It seems like most of the time things are just everywhere. It makes it hard to find things when we need something and when things are put away it’s always in random places.
Having a place for everything to go and teaching your children to put things away in the correct places is key to keeping your house organized, especially when your children are young. I have put together tips to help you get and stay organized while living with tiny people!
The first step to getting anything organized is to go through what you have and de-clutter. You can’t expect to stay organized if you are keeping a bunch of stuff you don’t need.
Downgrade as much as possible. Step two to de-cluttering is to go through and get rid of toys that aren’t needed and clothes that no longer fit. One of my biggest issues was that I just never seemed to get rid of anything.
At first because I wanted to have old clothes in case we had another little one but once we were done having kids I had no reason for keeping everything. Get rid of what you don’t need and if you are saving it for a future kid or any other reason just box it up and put it in the garage or somewhere else so it is out of the way.
Everything Needs A Home
In order to organize you need to make sure that everything has somewhere to be put. Not just a random drawer or place but a specific place you want it to be kept. Storage containers work great for helping to organize. I have several in different sizes for different things.
Toy bins are great for helping kids keep their toys organized too. My kids know when it’s time to pick up that all their toys need to be put in their toy bins. That way they stay put up and out of the way. It’s a good idea to regularly go through toys as well to get rid of any broken ones as well. In my house if it’s missing pieces or is broken it doesn’t stay.
As you find everything a place to be stored have your kids help so that they know and see where things need to be. If you can’t figure out where to put something then ask yourself if you really need that item. It can be hard to get rid of things sometimes and you will feel like you need to keep it even though you never actually use or need it.
We have little “cubbies” for the kids to put their backpacks, every day coats and shoes in. You can also get a stackable storage drawers like these and place their school clothes for the week and any other important items as well.
It makes it easier to have everything ready to go so that your week runs a bit smoother. No guessing where anything is or having to get clothes ready every night. You can find storage drawers and other storage type items almost anywhere that you can use for just about anything when it comes to organizing.
If you dont have a linen closet for towels or space for bathroom items the same stackable storage drawers above can work great for bathroom organization!
In the end just always try to utilize things you may already have and use every available space you may have to keep things in order. It will also help if you have at least one day a week that you do upkeep on making sure things are staying organized and you are getting rid of anything you have accumulated. I know how fast things can add up over a week so I try to make sure I have one day to throw things out or put new things away. I try to do it as I get things but sometimes a busy schedule can get in the way.
Do you have any great organization tips? We would love to hear them!
